4-Chloro-DL-phenylalanine is a selective and irreversible inhibitor of tryptophan hydroxylase, a rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of serotonin (5-HYDROXYTRYPTAMINE). 4-Chloro-DL-phenylalanine acts pharmacologically to deplete endogenous levels of serotonin.
