Quality Bio MEM was developed by Dr. Eagle to overcome problems encountered when attempting to grow normal fibroblasts and certain sub-types of HeLa cells. Studies were done that resulted in a medium that was richer than BME and supported the growth of a wider variety of more nutritionally fastidious cells. 'MEM' in its various versions has been used to grow many cell types in monolayer culture. The removal of the calcium component resulted in a medium, MEM Spinner, that supports the growth of cells in suspension culture. Joklik's Modification was also developed for suspension culture.
